Resources

Science Connects has the following resources available to assist STEM Ambassadors and Teachers in various projects.

Resources are only available to schools in conjunction with a STEM Ambassador.

If you would like to request any of the resources please contact Gail Penny on 0141 330 6396 or email: gail.penny@glasgow.ac.uk

Renewable Energy
"S" Cube Solar Science

The "S" Cube is a "hands-on" approach to helping P4-7 and S1 pupils understand how renewable energy works. It contains a solar panel and allows pupils to power a torch or thermometer, hook up a capacitor and voltmeter to learn more about the energy of the sun.

Funmaths Roadshow

The Funmaths Roadshow is a collection of 350 interactive mathematical puzzles for use with school children, students and university undergraduates between the ages of 10 and 20. The resource has been developed by the Liverpool Mathematical Society.
It is a valuable interactive classroom resource that improves problem solving skills and most importantly it changes attitudes towards mathematics. The emphasis is on enjoyment, challenge and relevance to the real world enabling youngsters to become highly motivated successful learners underpinning the design for the Curriculum for Excellence.

K'Nex Kits

We have boxes of K'Nex available, an indispensable resource for budding engineers if your school is competing in the K'Nex Challenge 2011.

Pupils can progress from the basic level of simple stationary structures with no moving parts, through structures with movement using rotation and moving into more complex machinery and hand driven mechanisms.

Astronomical F70070 Telescopes

The telescope is a 70mm refractor, which comes with a tripod and several eyepieces. To help teachers take full advantage of the telescope, there is a DVD showing how to set up the telescope, use a star chart, what you can see, and how to plan your observations.

The James Dyson Foundation
Education Box

The James Dyson Foundation Education Box is a disassembly and product analysis resource, designed to excite and inspire young people about design engineering.
The Education Box contains 1 DC22 Dyson baby vacum cleaner, complete with hose, wand and accessories, 1 Mini Flat Out Head, 7 Turbine Heads, 8 Torx Screw Drivers and James Dyson Foundation Engineering Posters.
There is an additional "Teachers Pack" available for download on the website at: http://jamesdysonfoundation.com/education

CD of Science Experiments

A free CD packed with fun experiments. The experiments have formal teaching notes and are made up of things found in any typical supermarket.

Solar Cars

Build your own solar powered car from the kits provided.
The solar kits include everything needed to build a model solar car.
The solar car converts the sun's energy directly into electricity, but don't worry if there's no sun, we have lamps that can provide enough energy to power the cars.
The kit provides an exciting and inspirng educational tool which helps to teach science, design & technology and renewable energy concepts.

STEM Clubs

FREE support and resources to help you with an after-school or lunchtime club related to any sort of STEM activity, eg Young Engineers and Science Club, Astronomy Club, Maths Club, Food Technology Club, Camera Club?
The STEM Club Network offers a wealth of information to teachers and Ambassadors who are involved in any form of STEM related club and gives guides on starting and running a club, ideas, resources, challenge information as well as hints, tips and tricks from other STEM related clubs across the country.
There is no cost involved, all you have to do is register your club on the STEM Club website!
STEMNET wants to help every school in the country to have a STEM Club and is hence providing an information sharing platform to every club, regardless of where it originates from or who it is organised by.
For more information about STEM Clubs and to register, visit the website at www.stemclubs.net

Scottish Government

The Scottish Government has established a website at www.infoscotland.com/science which includes descriptions of experiments, quizzes and games, as well as lots of science career-related information. The site will tell you what this science stuff is all about!
