This competition is a unique opportunity for senior pupils to take part in a European Wide competition run by the European Space Agency (ESA).

ESA is holding a competition for schools to create a working satellite within the confines of a soft drinks can. Chosen projects will compete in the final in Norway in April 2012 when the selected 10 satellites from all over Europe will be launched by rocket to the height of about 1 Km and will carry out some real science.

ESA have allocated one guaranteed launch slot to the winners of the Scottish Cansat Competition to be held for Scottish schools.

The following schools have now entered the competition:

    IET Education Fund

The IET Education Fund provides support for local education projects which are endorsed by IET Local Networks.

The IET is committed to encouraging students toward studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects and considering engineering and technology based courses and careers.

Any organisation capable of developing and delivering UK-based projects which promote STEM subjects to school children can apply for funding, including schools, IET Local Networks and IET TPNs. Awards of up to £5000 can be offered.

Applications for funding must be endorsed by the IET Local Network in which the project will be carried out, and applicants require a referee who can confirm their ability to deliver the project.

    2012 funding round

Bids for funding will be accepted from 1 January 2012 to 9 March 2012 for projects taking place 1 May 2012 to 30 April 2013. Bids submitted after 9 March cannot be considered.

A formal judging process will take place, with judges' decisions expected 25 April 2012.

For application criteria please visit the website .

    Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

The Royal Society of Chemistry's Spectroscopy in a Suitcase scheme is an outreach activity which gives school students the chance to learn about spectroscopy through hands-on experience. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques, the activities use real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase Scotland.

The use of the instruments might be of interest to STEM ambassadors who work with spectroscopy.

The equipment may also be available on a short-term loan basis.

To enquire about booking a session for your local school, please contact: N.G.A.Bell@sms.ed.ac.uk

For more information about the scheme, please visit the website.

    Science Council
Scientists Needed to Reveal Hidden Science

Science Council - STEM Ambassadors needed to volunteer for "Hidden Science" project.

The Science Council is working with a major mobile phone company on a mobile phone app entitled "Hidden Science", which is enabling people to have their burning science questions answered directly by scientists.

The app invites questions related to 12 monthly themes including Water, Medical Science, Fashion & Textiles, Travel & Tourism, Sport, Food, Imagining Different Tomorrows, Disaster, Space, Earth Science, Wealth & Luxury, and Computers and IT. All questions and answers are posted on the Future Morph website where we are giving it a careers information twist by showing the jobs of those answering and we will be developing supporting materials for each topic.

We are hoping to get a mixture of factual (How much water does the average household use?) and careers-based (Where can I study marine biology?) questions for each theme and you can sign up to any or all of the themes and answer questions via the online interface.

If you're interested in taking part and helping to reveal the hidden science of the world around us to young people, please email Holly at H.Margerison@scincecouncil.org stating your name, contact details and the themes you're interested in.

"S" Cubes - Solar Science Kits
for Ambassadors to use in schools

Renewable Energy is a favourite topic for schools to ask Ambassador help with. The topic of Planet Earth in the Curriculum for Excellence Sciences area includes "Energy Sources and Sustainability" and teachers are starting to request more and more visits from Ambassadors to help pupils gain a better understanding of this topic

To help Ambassadors work with pupils , we have a set of resources available for Ambassadors to borrow. These are "S" Cubes, manufactured by Solar & Wind Applications. We have 8 Cubes which is a big enough set for a class of 30 pupils to use at the same time.

The "S" Cube is a "hands-on" approach to helping P4-7 and S1 pupils understand how renewable energy works. The "S" Cube contains a solar panel and allows pupils to power a torch or thermometer, hook up a capacitor and voltmeter to learn more about the energy of the sun. Worksheets are provided for the pupils to work through and there is a CD of additional material.

If you are interested in taking "S" Cubes into schools to cover renewable energy areas, please get in touch with us. You are welcome to take an "S" Cube home to experiment with before committing to taking a set to a class!

    Visit www.solarwindapplications.com for more information.

Contact Gail, email Gail.Penny@glasgow.ac.uk to arrange to borrow the "S" Cube resource.

    Primary Secondary and Advanced
    Leaders Awards for STEM

The Leader's award for STEM was designed to give students between the ages of 5 and 19 an opportunity to gather personalised careers awareness. Students research, meet and interview professionals from a range of backgrounds about their career, career paths, asking questions that are important to them.

Information on the award and how STEM Ambassadors can support this is contained in the website at www.leadersaward.com

    Maths Activities - FunMaths Roadshow

Are you interested in taking Maths activities into schools? One of our Ambassadors, who held Maths related workshops at the recent STEM Ambassador Celebration Event has activities that you can be trained in and take to schools.

The FunMaths Roadshow is a collection of 350 mathematical activities suitable for use with school pupils, college students, and university undergraduates, overall between the ages of 5 and 20. The first 100 were developed to celebrate the centenary of the Liverpool Mathematical Society in 1999 and the further 250 have been developed subsequently.

Our Ambassador is willing to train other Ambassadors in the use of these activities.

If you would like to attend a training session on these Maths activities please contact Gail at stem-ambassadors@glasgow.ac.uk and we will organise a date once there is sufficient interest.

RedR (Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief)

A regional group has been set up in Glasgow. The group aim to provide support and training to individuals (not solely engineers) who may be interested in disaster relief and supporting the work RedR do.

They are currently looking for new members, if interested please visit the website at www.redr.org.uk
